COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and History BA (Hons) at Northumbria University offers a comprehensive program that develops students’ expertise across both disciplines. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through core literary modules including Introduction to Literary Studies, Talking Texts, and Gothic Stories, alongside history modules such as The Making of Contemporary Europe, Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe, and Making History, while international and EU students may take an academic language support module. Year 2 deepens literary and historical knowledge with core modules like Early Modern Cultures, Modernism and Modernity, and Literary Revolutions, complemented by a wide range of optional history modules covering topics from twentieth-century America, European revolutions, the Holocaust, social movements, and multiculturalism, as well as independent research projects and practical skills modules. Year 3 provides opportunities for practical experience through either a full-year work placement or a study abroad year, allowing students to apply their skills in real-world or international contexts. Year 4 allows students to specialise and personalise their studies through optional modules across advanced literary studies, creative writing, historical research, and thematic topics such as Shakespeare, Romanticism, twentieth-century global history, environmental studies, and public history, alongside the option to complete a Joint Honours Dissertation or Dissertation with Public History. The program equips students with research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing them for diverse academic and professional pathways.
