COURSE CURRICULUM

The program is structured over four years, offering a gradual and flexible development of literary knowledge and creative writing skills. In Year 1, students gain a strong foundation through core modules such as Introduction to Literary Studies, Reading Poetry, Talking Texts, and Gothic Stories, alongside creative modules like Story and Creative and Critical Practice, which develop essential analytical and writing abilities. International and EU students may also complete an academic language support module. In Year 2, students expand their understanding of literary history and theory through modules including Early Modern Cultures, Modernism and Modernity, and Literary Revolutions, while continuing creative development with Thinking About Voice, Working With Structure, and Pitch to Publication. An optional study abroad opportunity is also available. Year 3 provides flexibility with the option to undertake a full-year work placement or study abroad, allowing students to gain practical or international experience. In Year 4, students can specialise by selecting from a wide range of optional modules covering diverse topics such as Shakespeare, Romanticism, Victorian fiction, and contemporary literature, alongside creative options like Advanced Creative Writing, Audio Storytelling, and The Craft of the Playwright. Students may also complete an English Dissertation or a Creative Writing Project, tailoring their degree to their interests.
