COURSE CURRICULUM

This program is structured over four years, offering a comprehensive and flexible study of American Studies and literature. In the first year, students develop a strong academic foundation through core modules in American Studies, literary studies, cultural criticism, and topics such as representations of the United States and gothic literature, alongside essential academic language skills. The second year builds on this knowledge with core subjects including early modern cultures, modernism, literary revolutions, and the study of America in the 1960s, as well as an extended essay to strengthen research abilities. Students can also choose from a wide range of optional modules covering politics, media, identity, and creative approaches, with the opportunity to study abroad. The third year offers valuable professional or international experience through an optional work placement or study abroad year. In the final year, students engage with advanced and specialised topics such as environmental perspectives on America and a variety of literature-based themes including gender, gothic studies, and contemporary writing. A broad selection of optional modules in film, media, and cultural studies allows further personalisation, while dissertation options enable independent research. Overall, the course develops critical thinking, research, and communication skills for diverse career paths.
