COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language BA (Hons) program offers a well-structured curriculum that develops a deep understanding of linguistics alongside practical and analytical skills. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation through core modules such as English grammar, discourse analysis, and approaches to language study, as well as an introduction to linguistics and TESOL classrooms. This stage focuses on understanding how language works and how it is used in different contexts. The second year builds on this knowledge with modules covering language and society, the history of English, the psychology of language, and the sounds and structures of English. Students also have the option to enhance their experience through study abroad, tutoring, and TESOL classroom practice. The third year provides flexibility, offering the opportunity to undertake a work placement or a full year of study abroad, helping to develop professional and global skills. In the final year, students specialise further by completing an English Language dissertation and choosing from advanced topics such as cognitive linguistics, world Englishes, language variation, and language and social disadvantage. Throughout the program, academic language support is available for international students, and graduates are well prepared for careers in education, media, communication, and research.
