COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media and Communication (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) program provides a comprehensive pathway from foundational study to advanced media practice, combining theoretical understanding, practical skills, and professional development. The foundation year introduces students to critical cultural encounters, culture and society, film foundations, media genres, and performance practices, building a broad understanding of media, culture, and creative expression. In the first year, students develop core knowledge through modules in media, communication and history, analysing media and film, approaches to media, culture and communication, consuming media, and digital media production in audio, video, and writing, with academic language support for international and EU students. The second year focuses on media industries, media ethics and current affairs, reviews and features, and media communication planning, while offering optional modules in media, power and identity, researching audiences, sport, media and society, and cinema and society. Students may also choose a study abroad semester to gain international exposure. In the third year, students have opportunities for a full-year work placement or study abroad, enhancing professional experience and global perspective. The final year combines a core employability portfolio with optional advanced modules in digital media and society, media and society case studies, media and communications projects, dissertation, media, gender and sexualities, and film festivals. The program equips graduates with critical thinking, practical media skills, and professional readiness for careers in media, communication, cultural industries, and postgraduate study.
