COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program that combines theoretical knowledge, fieldwork, and practical experience to develop a deep understanding of human and environmental geography. The foundation year introduces key concepts such as environmental geography, sustainable development, earth system sciences, and post-industrial landscapes, while also building essential fieldwork and communication skills. In Year 1, students gain a broad foundation in both human and physical geography, studying topics such as development, environmental data, geographical ideas, and fieldwork, with additional academic language support available for international and EU students. Year 2 focuses more on human geography, with core modules in research methods, political and social geographies, and economic development, alongside a variety of optional modules including urban planning, GIS, sustainability, and fieldwork opportunities in the UK or internationally. Year 3 offers flexible options for work placements or study abroad, either as a full year or a semester, providing valuable professional or global experience. In Year 4, students complete a dissertation and choose from a range of optional modules covering topics such as race and multiculturalism, disasters, urban studies, global capitalism, and media spaces. The course prepares graduates for careers in planning, sustainability, policy, and research.
