COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fine Art BA (Hons) Extended Degree at Northumbria offers a comprehensive and flexible pathway for students to develop creative, critical, and professional skills in contemporary art. The foundation year provides an introduction to core concepts through modules such as The Body, Art and the City, Identity, Nature and Technologies, Creative Research, and Creative and Critical Research, allowing students to build confidence, foster creativity, and establish a strong academic base. In year one, students expand their practice and theoretical understanding through Strategies in Studio Practice, Positions in Practice, Introduction to Contemporary Art, Visual Material Culture 1 and 2, and Understanding Engagement, with academic language support for international students. Year two focuses on advanced studio practice, research, and professional engagement through Art Practice 3 and 4, Public Engagement, Studio and Gallery work, and Art Discourses and Encounters, alongside the option to study abroad to gain global experience and broaden artistic perspectives. Optional work placement and study abroad opportunities in year three provide real-world experience, enhancing employability and professional development. In the final year, students consolidate their skills through a Final Project, Independent Research Project, Professional and Self-Organising Practice, and Sites of Production / Sites of Presentation, preparing them for careers in creative practice, curation, arts management, community arts, or further study while balancing experimentation, research, and professional engagement.
