COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) at Northumbria is a four-year program designed to develop practical filmmaking skills alongside critical and theoretical understanding, preparing students for careers in the screen industries and creative media. The foundation year provides a broad introduction to key concepts in critical cultural encounters, culture and society, film foundations, media genres, and performance practices, fostering creative confidence and analytical skills. In Year 1, students build technical and theoretical knowledge through modules on film history, documentary approaches, storytelling, sound and editing, audiovisual essay production, and media analysis, with optional language support for international and EU students. Year 2 expands on practical and professional experience, covering cinematography, advanced documentary techniques, drama production from script to screen, Hollywood cinema, genre studies, and a professional placement, with an option to study abroad to gain international perspectives. Year 3 offers extended industry experience through optional work placements or study abroad opportunities, allowing students to apply their skills in professional contexts. Year 4 emphasizes advanced study and specialization, including transmedia storytelling, transnational cinema, experimental and horror film, screen adaptations, film festivals, media, gender and sexualities, practice-based research projects, and an optional dissertation. Throughout the program, students develop creative, technical, and analytical skills, graduating with the expertise, professional experience, and critical insight to succeed as filmmakers, media professionals, researchers, and cultural practitioners.
