COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) program provides a structured and flexible curriculum that develops strong literary knowledge alongside critical and creative skills. The foundation year introduces key themes such as identity, creative writing, and the social impact of literature, while building essential academic skills for university study. In the first year, students gain a solid grounding in literary studies through modules on poetry, cultural criticism, and thematic topics such as American history and gothic literature, helping them develop analytical and interpretive abilities. The second year deepens this understanding by exploring historical and cultural contexts, including early modern cultures, modernism, and literary revolutions, while offering a range of optional modules such as tragedy, historical fiction, and literature in the heritage sector. Students also have the opportunity to study abroad or take part in tutoring activities to enhance their experience. The third year offers flexibility through optional work placement or study abroad, allowing students to gain valuable professional or international experience. In the final year, students specialise further by completing a dissertation and choosing from a wide range of advanced modules, including Shakespeare, Romanticism, contemporary literature, and creative storytelling. Throughout the course, academic language support is available for international students, preparing graduates for careers in education, media, publishing, and cultural industries.
