COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and American Studies (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) program provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum that combines literary analysis with the study of American history, culture, and politics. The foundation year introduces key themes such as identity, global encounters, and political systems, while developing essential academic skills for university study. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules in American Studies, literary studies, and cultural criticism, alongside topics such as representations of the United States and gothic literature. The second year deepens this knowledge with core modules on modernism, literary history, and American society, including an extended essay, while offering a wide range of optional subjects in areas such as politics, media, and cultural studies. Students also have the option to study abroad, enhancing their global perspective. The third year provides flexibility through optional work placement or study abroad, allowing students to gain valuable professional or international experience. In the final year, students specialise further by exploring themes such as the American environment and African American history, alongside a variety of optional modules across literature, media, and history. They may also complete a dissertation or public history project. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in education, media, publishing, and cultural industries.
