COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Literature (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) program offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines the study of language and literary texts while building strong academic and professional skills. The foundation year introduces students to key concepts such as identity, creative writing, and the social impact of language and literature, alongside essential study skills for university success. In the first year, students develop a solid grounding in both disciplines through modules in literary studies, English grammar, language analysis, and thematic studies such as gothic literature. The second year expands this knowledge with a focus on historical and cultural contexts, including early modern cultures, modernism, the history of English, and the relationship between language and society, with an optional opportunity to study abroad. The third year provides flexibility through optional work placement or study abroad, allowing students to gain valuable real-world or international experience. In the final year, students can tailor their studies by choosing from a wide range of specialised modules in both literature and linguistics, alongside the option to complete a dissertation in either area. Throughout the course, academic language support is available for international students, and graduates are well prepared for careers in education, media, publishing, and communication.
