COURSE CURRICULUM

The Interior Design (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program designed to develop creative, technical, and professional skills in interior design across a wide range of spaces. The foundation year introduces students to essential design skills through modules in studio practice, design contexts, specialisms, and a major project, culminating in a portfolio and exhibition, providing an alternative route for those who do not meet standard entry requirements. In the first year, students build on this foundation with modules exploring experimental processes, discovering interior design, responding to context, architectural technologies, alternative materials, and introductory design theory, supported by academic language skills for international and EU students. The second year focuses on expanding practical and conceptual knowledge through modules on emerging design issues, tactics and strategies, wellbeing in interior spaces, branded commercial environments, and contextual research. In the third year, students engage with advanced projects and contemporary challenges, including speculative design futures, business and commercial strategies, advanced commercial interior design, and research practice, enabling them to produce professional-level portfolios and design solutions. Throughout the program, a studio-based approach emphasizes feedback, peer learning, and iterative development, helping students to refine their creative and technical abilities. The course combines conceptual thinking, practical expertise, and industry-focused learning to prepare graduates for careers in interior design and the wider creative sector.
