COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and American Studies (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) program is structured to provide a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of global history alongside American society, culture, and politics. The foundation year develops essential academic skills while introducing key themes such as fake news, authoritarianism, global encounters, and responses to crises. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through core modules in American studies, European and US history, and global histories of power and ideology, alongside developing research skills. Year 2 offers a wide range of optional modules, allowing students to explore topics such as American society, political change, media, culture, and historical conflicts, while also completing an extended essay and enhancing employability skills. Opportunities for study abroad and independent research further enrich the learning experience. In the final year, students specialise in areas such as environmental history, social movements, global conflicts, and media studies, with options to complete a dissertation or public history project. This structure allows students to tailor their degree to their interests while developing advanced research, analytical, and communication skills. Academic language support is available throughout for international students, ensuring they are fully supported in their studies.
