COURSE CURRICULUM

The Graphic Design (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) course is structured to develop creative, technical, and critical design skills through a progressive learning journey. The foundation year introduces students to essential design concepts, studio skills, and contexts, allowing them to explore different specialisms while building confidence through projects, portfolio development, and exhibition work. In Year 1, students focus on core graphic design principles, including design history, theory, and practical methods, alongside typographic fundamentals such as form, composition, and layout. They also develop skills in ideation and visual problem-solving through hands-on projects and experimental processes. Year 2 advances these skills by exploring contemporary design issues, social change, and collaborative design practices. Students engage in real-world design challenges, including responsible branding, while considering the broader impact of design in society. In Year 3, the course emphasizes independent and professional practice, where students work on self-initiated projects and explore future design contexts and challenges. Modules also include specialized topics such as design for music, encouraging creative exploration. Throughout the course, collaborative learning and critical thinking are key, and academic language support is available for international students.
