COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) at Northumbria University offers a structured program that develops understanding of human and environmental processes through a mix of theoretical study, fieldwork, and research. The foundation year introduces key topics such as environmental geography, sustainable development, earth system sciences, and post-industrial landscapes, alongside building fieldwork and communication skills. In Year 1, students gain a broad grounding in both human and physical geography, studying areas such as development, environmental data, geographical ideas, and fieldwork, while international and EU students can develop academic language skills. Year 2 focuses more on human geography, with core modules in research approaches, political and social geographies, and economic development, alongside a range of optional modules including urban planning, sustainability, GIS, and fieldwork in the UK or internationally, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. In Year 3, students complete a geography and environment dissertation while choosing from a wide selection of optional modules covering topics such as race and multiculturalism, disasters, urban studies, global capitalism, and media spaces. The course combines academic learning with practical experience and critical analysis, equipping students with research, analytical, and fieldwork skills needed for careers in planning, policy, sustainability, and social research.
