COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fine Art BA (Hons) program at Northumbria provides a structured and comprehensive approach to developing both creative practice and critical understanding of contemporary art. The foundation year introduces students to core concepts through modules such as The Body, Art and the City, Identity, Nature and Technologies, Creative Research, and Creative and Critical Research, fostering creativity, confidence, and academic skills. In year one, students build on these foundations with modules in Strategies in Studio Practice, Positions in Practice, Introduction to Contemporary Art, and Visual Material Culture, alongside a focus on understanding engagement and academic language skills for international students. Year two emphasizes the development of practical and research skills through Art Practice 3 and 4, Public Engagement, Studio and Gallery work, and Art Discourses and Encounters, with opportunities for study abroad enhancing global perspectives and professional experience. In the final year, students consolidate their learning with a substantial Final Project, Independent Research Project, and Professional and Self-Organising Practice, while also exploring the relationship between production and presentation through Sites of Production and Sites of Presentation. Across all years, the program encourages a balance of experimentation, critical inquiry, and professional development, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for a wide range of careers in the arts, from creative practice and curation to research, community engagement, and further study.
