COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) at Northumbria is a comprehensive program that combines practical filmmaking skills with critical and theoretical study, preparing students for careers across the screen industries and related creative sectors. The foundation year introduces students to core concepts in critical cultural encounters, culture and society, film foundations, media genres, and performance practices, helping to build analytical skills, creative confidence, and technical understanding. In Year 1, students develop a strong grounding in film history, documentary and storytelling approaches, sound and editing techniques, audiovisual essay production, and media analysis, with optional language support for international and EU students. Year 2 focuses on professional and practical experience, including cinematography, advanced documentary approaches, drama production from script to screen, genre studies, Hollywood cinema, and optional study abroad opportunities, as well as a professional placement to enhance industry readiness. Year 3 emphasizes advanced, specialized study, with modules on transmedia storytelling, transnational cinemas, practice-based research, horror and experimental film, screen adaptations, film festivals, and media, gender, and sexualities, alongside an optional dissertation. The program integrates hands-on production, research, and theoretical analysis, fostering creative, technical, and critical skills. Graduates leave with the expertise and professional experience required to work as filmmakers, critics, curators, and media professionals, capable of contributing to the evolving global film industry.
