COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of literary studies while developing critical, analytical, and creative skills. The foundation year introduces key themes such as identity, creative writing, and the role of literature in society, alongside essential academic skills for university success. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in literary analysis through modules exploring poetry, criticism, and cultural concepts, as well as diverse topics such as American history and gothic literature. The second year expands this knowledge by examining historical and cultural contexts, including early modern cultures, modernism, and literary revolutions, while offering a variety of optional modules such as tragedy, historical fiction, and literature in the heritage sector. Students may also take part in study abroad opportunities or tutoring to enhance their experience. In the final year, students specialise further by completing a dissertation and selecting from a wide range of optional modules covering themes such as Shakespeare, Romanticism, war literature, contemporary writing, and environmental storytelling. Academic language support is available for international students throughout the course. Overall, the program equips students with strong research, communication, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in education, media, publishing, and cultural industries.
