COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and History (Extended Degree) at Northumbria University begins with a foundation year designed to build essential skills for academic study, including modules such as Humanities Portfolio, War and Words, and Tyrants and Dictators, which introduce students to critical thinking, research, and historical analysis. In Year 1, students progress to core modules in both disciplines, including Introduction to Literary Studies, Talking Texts, Gothic Stories, and history modules such as The Making of Contemporary Europe, Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe, and Making History, developing strong analytical, research, and communication skills. International and EU students may also take an academic language support module. Year 2 deepens understanding of literary and historical contexts with core modules like Early Modern Cultures, Modernism and Modernity, and Literary Revolutions, alongside a wide selection of optional history and literature modules covering topics from the US in the twentieth century to European revolutions and social histories. Year 3 allows students to specialise and pursue advanced study through a broad range of optional modules, including Gothic literature, Romanticism, Shakespeare, environmental history, modern political and social histories, and creative writing projects, while offering the opportunity to complete a joint honours dissertation or dissertation with public history. The program combines literary and historical perspectives to produce well-rounded, culturally aware graduates with strong research and communication skills.
