COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and American Studies (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) curriculum offers a broad and interdisciplinary approach, combining literary analysis with the study of American culture, history, and politics. The foundation year introduces key themes such as identity, conflict, and global encounters, while developing essential academic skills for university study. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules in American Studies, literary analysis, and cultural criticism, alongside topics such as representations of the United States and gothic literature. The second year deepens this understanding with core modules on modernism, literary history, and American society, including an extended essay, while offering a wide range of optional subjects such as media, politics, and cultural studies. Students may also take advantage of study abroad opportunities to enhance their global perspective. In the final year, students further specialise by exploring themes such as the American environment, African American history, and contemporary literature, alongside a variety of optional modules in literature, history, and media. They also have the option to complete a dissertation or a public history project. Throughout the program, academic language support is available for international students, and the course prepares graduates for careers in education, media, publishing, cultural industries, and related fields.
