COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) curriculum is structured to build a strong foundation in language studies while developing academic and practical skills. The foundation year introduces key themes such as identity, communication, and creative expression, alongside essential academic skills for university study. Students explore topics like language and discrimination, public humanities, and creative writing, preparing them for further study. In the first year, the focus shifts to core linguistic knowledge, including English grammar, discourse analysis, and approaches to language study, as well as an introduction to teaching English to speakers of other languages. The second year deepens understanding through modules on language and society, the history of English, and the psychology of language, while offering optional opportunities such as study abroad, tutoring, and classroom-based TESOL experience. In the final year, students specialise further, completing a dissertation and choosing from advanced topics like cognitive linguistics, world Englishes, and language variation and change. Throughout the course, academic language support is available for international students. Overall, the program combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills, enabling students to analyse language in diverse contexts and preparing them for careers in education, communication, research, and related fields.
