COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Literature (Extended Degree) BA (Hons) curriculum is designed to develop both linguistic knowledge and literary understanding through a structured and engaging program. The foundation year introduces key themes such as identity, creative writing, and the role of language and literature in society, while building essential academic skills for university study. In the first year, students explore core areas including literary studies, English grammar, language analysis, and a variety of texts, such as gothic literature, helping them build a strong foundation in both disciplines. The second year deepens this knowledge with modules on early modern cultures, modernism, the history of English, and the relationship between language and society, while also offering an optional study abroad opportunity to broaden cultural awareness. In the final year, students can tailor their studies through a wide range of optional modules, covering topics such as Shakespeare, Romanticism, war literature, contemporary writing, and advanced linguistics, alongside the option to complete either a literature or language dissertation. Throughout the course, academic language support is available for international students. Overall, the program combines critical analysis, creative thinking, and research skills, preparing graduates for diverse careers in fields such as education, publishing, media, and communication.
