COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Relations and Politics BA (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a structured and progressive approach to understanding politics and global affairs. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding through modules such as Britain, Europe and the world, democrats and dictators, international conflict and cooperation, researching international relations and politics, thinking globally, and thinking politically, with support for international and EU students in academic language skills. The second year expands this knowledge with applied research methods, theories and practice of democracy, global governance, theories of international relations, and government in action, while offering optional modules and experiences including study abroad, politics work experience, foreign policy analysis, human rights, and representing political violence, providing practical insights alongside theoretical understanding. In the final year, students focus on core topics including active citizenship, critical security, and a dissertation, alongside optional modules such as genocide, media power and propaganda, the politics of oil and global warming, terrorism, war games simulating security negotiations, and the impact of technology on politics. The degree emphasizes critical thinking, research skills, and real-world application, equipping students with the analytical, ethical, and practical skills needed for careers in diplomacy, international organizations, public policy, political analysis, and other roles that require a deep understanding of global political and social challenges.
