COURSE CURRICULUM

The Interior Design BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is a three-year program that combines creative, technical, and professional development to prepare students for careers in interior design across commercial, lifestyle, educational, civic, and cultural environments. In the first year, students develop foundational skills through modules in experimental design processes, discovering interior design, responding to context, architectural technologies and alternative materials, and an introduction to interior design contexts. Academic language support is provided for international and EU students to enhance communication and understanding. The second year builds on this foundation by addressing emerging design issues, tactics and strategies, wellbeing-focused interior design, branded commercial environments, and contextual investigation, allowing students to integrate conceptual thinking with practical problem-solving and technical knowledge. In the third year, students focus on advanced interior design projects and contemporary challenges, including speculative design futures, business and commercial strategies, advanced commercial design, and research practice, culminating in professional-level portfolios and design solutions. The program emphasizes a studio-based approach, with continuous feedback, formative reviews, and peer learning, helping students refine their creative and technical abilities. Across all three years, students develop a combination of design thinking, practical expertise, critical analysis, and industry-relevant skills, equipping them to create impactful, socially and environmentally conscious spaces and to pursue successful careers in interior design.
