COURSE CURRICULUM

The History BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is a flexible and comprehensive program that spans three years, combining core modules with a wide range of optional courses to allow students to pursue their academic interests. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in areas such as contemporary Europe, US history, late medieval and early modern Europe, global histories of power and ideology, and modern British history, while learning essential research and analytical skills. Academic language support is available for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation with core modules in historical debate and a broad selection of optional modules covering topics such as European conflicts, the Holocaust, revolutionary France, British immigration and multiculturalism, US political history, and practical experiences like fieldwork or study abroad. Students also have the opportunity to focus on independent research projects. In the final year, students engage in advanced optional modules and extended research through a history dissertation or public history dissertation, exploring themes such as American and British history, early modern Europe, Italian fascism, environmental disasters, genocide, urban life, and contemporary global politics. Throughout the program, students gain research, analytical, and communication skills while connecting historical study to contemporary issues, preparing them for careers in research, public service, education, cultural institutions, and other professional fields.
