COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Politics BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is structured over three years, combining core and optional modules to provide a broad and flexible education. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge with core modules covering the making of contemporary Europe, late medieval and early modern Europe, historical methods, political systems, international relations, and political thinking. Academic language support is available for international and EU students. The second year allows greater specialization, with core modules in democracy, global governance, and international relations, alongside a wide range of optional modules including US history, European conflicts, the Holocaust, revolutionary France, migration and multiculturalism in Britain, and practical politics through fieldwork or study abroad. Optional modules also focus on careers preparation and research skills. In the final year, students can pursue advanced optional modules and independent research projects, including joint honours or public history dissertations, while exploring topics such as American history, urban life in Britain, Italian fascism, environmental issues, genocide, media and propaganda, terrorism, and contemporary politics. Across all years, students develop analytical, research, and communication skills, with opportunities for practical experience, study abroad, and independent learning, preparing them for diverse careers in politics, public service, research, and other fields that require critical thinking and historical insight.
