COURSE CURRICULUM

The Guidance and Counselling BA (Hons) course is structured over three years to develop theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional understanding in helping roles. In Year 1, students are introduced to key concepts such as counselling perspectives, academic research, and the social factors influencing behaviour, while also developing essential skills for supporting others and understanding professional contexts. This year builds a strong foundation in both theory and academic practice. In Year 2, the focus shifts towards applied skills and real-world practice, with modules in mentoring, the skilled helper approach, group counselling, and career development. Students also engage in research in practice and can choose optional modules such as creative helping practices or exploring professional practice, allowing them to tailor their learning to their interests. In Year 3, students consolidate their knowledge through a major project, alongside advanced modules in career guidance models, counselling approaches, and working with specific client groups such as older adults. Topics such as brief and narrative approaches further enhance practical counselling skills. Academic language support is available throughout for international students. Overall, the course equips graduates with the knowledge, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills needed for careers in guidance, education, and community support settings.
