COURSE CURRICULUM

The Furniture and Product Design BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is structured over three years to develop creative, technical, and professional design skills through a combination of theory and hands-on practice. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation by studying design cultures and theory while developing practical studio skills through a range of design projects and experimental processes. This year encourages creativity, critical thinking, and an understanding of design principles, with additional academic language support available for international and EU students. In Year 2, students advance their skills in 3D design, focusing on making, CAD and communication, and project development, alongside exploring the broader context of design and engaging with emerging issues and practices. This stage emphasizes technical proficiency, innovation, and the ability to respond to contemporary design challenges. In Year 3, students consolidate their learning through professional design practice, a major design project, and critical design evaluation, while also exploring contemporary challenges and future directions in design. The program combines studio-based learning, research, and real-world application, enabling students to refine their individual design identity and professional approach. Throughout the course, students develop problem-solving, creative thinking, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in furniture and product design and the wider creative industries.
