COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Film program at Northumbria is a three-year course designed to combine practical filmmaking skills with critical and theoretical study, preparing students for careers across the screen industries and creative media sectors. In Year 1, students build a foundation in film history, documentary and storytelling approaches, sound and editing, audiovisual essay production, and media analysis, with optional language support for international and EU students, providing both technical and analytical skills. Year 2 develops practical expertise and professional experience, covering cinematography, advanced documentary approaches, drama production from script to screen, Hollywood cinema, and genre studies, alongside a professional placement to enhance industry readiness. Students also have the opportunity to study abroad for an immersive international perspective. Year 3 focuses on advanced and specialized study, including transmedia storytelling, transnational cinemas, experimental and horror film, screen adaptations, film festivals, media, gender and sexualities, practice-based research projects, and an optional dissertation, allowing students to integrate creative production with critical research. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, practical workshops, project-based production, and professional engagement. Graduates leave with the technical proficiency, creative vision, and critical insight required to work as filmmakers, media professionals, curators, and researchers, equipped to contribute to the evolving global film industry.
