COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of literature while developing critical and practical skills. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through core modules including Introduction to Literary Studies, Reading Poetry, Talking Texts, Gothic Stories, and Concepts in Criticism and Culture, alongside Representing the US, which explores historical and cultural narratives. International and EU students may also take an academic language support module. Year 2 deepens students’ engagement with literary history and theory through core modules such as Early Modern Cultures, Modernism and Modernity, and Literary Revolutions, while offering a variety of optional modules that allow students to specialise in areas like Tragedy, Literature and Adaptation, Historical Fiction, or practical applications such as Literature in the Museum and student tutoring. An optional study abroad year is also available. In Year 3, students consolidate their knowledge and research skills through a core English Dissertation, while exploring advanced optional modules including Gothic Sexualities, Marlowe in Context, Shakespeare, Romanticism, contemporary literature, environmental writing, Victorian fiction, and creative storytelling techniques. The program emphasizes both academic rigor and practical experience, equipping students with analytical, research, and communication skills, and preparing them for careers in cultural, educational, and literary sectors, as well as postgraduate study.
