COURSE CURRICULUM

The course is designed over three years to progressively develop students’ literary knowledge and creative writing skills. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through core modules such as Introduction to Literary Studies, Reading Poetry, Talking Texts, and Gothic Stories, while also engaging in creative development through Story and Creative and Critical Practice. These modules focus on essential reading, analysis, and writing skills. International and EU students may also take an academic language support module. In Year 2, students deepen their understanding of literature across historical periods with modules like Early Modern Cultures, Modernism and Modernity, and Literary Revolutions, while continuing to develop their writing through Thinking About Voice, Working With Structure, and Pitch to Publication. There is also an optional study abroad opportunity. In Year 3, students can tailor their learning through a wide range of optional modules, including topics such as Shakespeare, Romanticism, Victorian fiction, and contemporary literature, alongside creative options like Advanced Creative Writing, Audio Storytelling, and The Craft of the Playwright. Students may also choose to complete an English Dissertation or a Creative Writing Project. This flexible structure allows students to specialise according to their interests while gaining both academic and creative expertise.
