COURSE CURRICULUM

This program is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of American Studies and literary analysis across three years. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules that introduce American Studies, literary studies, and key cultural concepts, alongside topics such as representations of the United States, criticism, and gothic literature. These modules develop essential analytical and communication skills. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through core subjects including early modern cultures, modernism, literary revolutions, and American history, particularly the 1960s, while also completing an extended essay. A wide range of optional modules allows students to explore areas such as politics, media, cultural identity, and creative approaches to genre. There is also an opportunity to study abroad, enhancing global experience. In the final year, students focus on advanced and specialised topics, including environmental perspectives on America and various literature-based themes such as gothic studies, gender, and contemporary writing. Additional options cover film, media, and global cultural studies, allowing for interdisciplinary exploration. Students may also complete a dissertation or public history project, showcasing independent research and critical thinking. Overall, the course offers flexibility, depth, and practical skills relevant to diverse career paths.
