COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Literature BA (Hons) curriculum is designed to provide a balanced and in-depth understanding of both linguistic studies and literary analysis. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules that introduce literary studies, English grammar, and approaches to language study, alongside the exploration of different texts such as gothic literature. This stage develops essential analytical and interpretive skills. In the second year, the focus expands to include historical and cultural contexts, with modules covering early modern cultures, modernism, the history of the English language, and the relationship between language and society. Students also have the opportunity to study abroad, enhancing their global perspective and cultural awareness. In the final year, the course offers a wide range of optional modules, allowing students to specialise in areas of interest across both language and literature. Topics include Shakespeare, Romanticism, war literature, contemporary writing, and advanced linguistics such as cognitive linguistics and language variation. Students may also choose to complete a dissertation in either English language or literature. Academic language support is available for international students throughout the program. Overall, the course develops critical thinking, research, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, media, publishing, and related fields.
