COURSE CURRICULUM

The Childhood and Early Years Studies BA (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a structured three-year program that combines theoretical understanding with practical experience. In the first year, students focus on foundational aspects of childhood, including child development, children’s voices, family and schooling contexts, social policy, approaches to learning, and perspectives on childhood and youth, with additional academic language support for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation by exploring young people in society, global perspectives on childhood, play and the early years curriculum, professional practice, research skills, and social and emotional wellbeing, while also offering optional modules in areas such as inclusive practice, health promotion, and substance use, allowing students to tailor their learning. In the final year, students undertake a substantial research project in childhood and early years studies, alongside core modules on young children as meaning makers, leadership and collaboration in children’s services, changing childhoods, and perspectives on children’s literature. Across all three years, the program emphasizes critical thinking, reflective practice, and the integration of academic knowledge with real-world application. Students gain practical experience and develop professional skills that prepare them for careers in education, social work, children’s services, or further study, equipping graduates to positively impact the lives and development of children and young people.
