ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Northumbria University, formally known as the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, is a public research university located in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England. It became a university in 1992, with its academic roots tracing back to Rutherford College founded in 1877. The university is primarily based at its City Campus in central Newcastle, alongside the Coach Lane Campus on the outskirts of the city, and also operates campuses in London and Amsterdam. It is organised into four faculties covering arts and social sciences, business and law, engineering and environment, and health and life sciences, and serves a student population of over 38,000. Northumbria has established a strong research profile and was ranked 23rd in the UK for research power in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, reflecting significant growth in research capacity. In 2022, it was named UK University of the Year by Times Higher Education in recognition of its transformation into a research-intensive institution. The university is a member of major higher education bodies including Universities UK and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. With a substantial annual income and strong regional impact, Northumbria University plays a key role in education, research and professional training both in the UK and internationally.
