COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Contemporary Creative Writing at Northeastern University London is structured to provide both foundational and specialised creative writing training alongside an extended final project. Students complete two required courses, Creative Writing Now and Publishing Your Writing, which equip them with core skills in contemporary writing practice and professional knowledge of the literary marketplace. In addition to these core courses, students select two masterclasses from a choice of four options: Short Stories and Novels, Poetry, Creative Nonfiction, or Scripts and Screenplays, allowing them to tailor their studies to their preferred creative form. Full-time students typically take two 30-credit courses per semester, while part-time students take one per semester, with course scheduling and pathways determined by the University based on lecturer availability and course offerings. The program culminates in a Dissertation, a 60-credit extended creative project supervised by an experienced lecturer in the student’s chosen form. Full-time students complete the Dissertation over one semester, while part-time students complete it over two semesters. This structure ensures students develop both technical craft and professional skills, while the dissertation allows them to produce a substantial creative portfolio that demonstrates their abilities, critical understanding, and readiness to engage with the contemporary literary and creative industries. Graduates leave with a combination of practical, professional, and creative expertise.
