COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English degree is structured over three years to provide both a broad foundation in literary study and opportunities for focused exploration. In the first year, students are introduced to core skills in literary analysis through courses such as Criticism: Practice, The Victorians and Us, Revolution, Rebirth, Religion: Early Modern Poetry, and British Drama and the London Stage, complemented by four electives that allow for academic breadth. The second year builds on this foundation with more advanced engagement in theory and period-based study. Courses include Criticism: Theory, Shakespeare: Seven Plays, and Satire, Feeling, Innovation, focusing on 18th-century and Romantic literature. Students also explore either Modernism and Postmodernism or Literature and Decolonisation, with the option to study abroad at Northeastern University in the USA, alongside four additional electives. In the final year, the focus shifts to contemporary and contextual approaches, with courses such as Literature, Land and the Environment, North American Narratives/Counternarratives, London: Literature, Culture, Identity, and Contemporary Writing: 2000 – Now. Students also take two electives and complete a substantial Final Project in English. This progression develops critical, analytical, and research skills while fostering cultural awareness, preparing graduates for diverse careers in writing, media, culture, and beyond.
