COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, students will begin by gaining foundational knowledge and skills in mental health nursing. The Practice Learning 1 Mental Health module focuses on meeting the care needs of individuals with physical, mental, cognitive, and behavioral health challenges. Students will demonstrate professionalism in line with the NMC code, developing the ability to perform various procedures under supervision across different health and social care settings. The Developing Scientific Principles for Mental Health Nursing module introduces key mental health conditions, their signs, symptoms, and underlying anatomy and physiology, while also covering the pathology related to these conditions. Expansive Learning for Mental Health Nursing Practice further builds on these principles, focusing on emotional intelligence, responsible nursing practice, and the ability to evaluate complex problems. The Developing Nursing Knowledge and Professional Practice for Mental Health Nursing module helps students to enhance their clinical and professional judgment in personalized care, aligning with NMC standards. In Year 2, students will deepen their understanding of mental health nursing with advanced modules. The Advanced Scientific Principles for Mental Health Nursing module builds on Year 1 knowledge, focusing on complex mental health care and reviewing current best practices in physical care. It also includes a focus on pharmacological principles, which will support future prescribing practices. The Advanced Nursing Knowledge and Professional Practice for Mental Health Nursing module consolidates the knowledge gained in the first year, equipping students to work autonomously with individuals across the lifespan who face a range of physical, mental, cognitive, and behavioral challenges. This year provides an opportunity to refine and apply nursing skills at an advanced level, preparing students for independent practice in the field of mental health nursing.
