COURSE CURRICULUM
The veterinary nursing program is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of veterinary care across different species, developing both theoretical and practical skills essential for professional practice. In the first year, students begin with foundational knowledge of body systems such as the gastrointestinal and integument systems, along with basic veterinary nursing skills. Modules such as Fundamentals of Working in a Veterinary Environment focus on health and safety, anatomy, disease prevention, and patient care, providing the core skills needed for a veterinary placement. Professional Development - Legal & Professional prepares students for the legal and ethical aspects of veterinary nursing, while Practical Veterinary Nursing - Placement & Clinical Skills ensures hands-on experience in a clinical setting.Year two builds upon this foundation with a deeper exploration of body systems, such as the musculoskeletal and endocrine systems, and the safe use of radiography as a diagnostic tool. The Professional Development - Evidence-based Veterinary Nursing, Communication & Ethics module helps students refine their communication and decision-making skills, while Practical Veterinary Nursing continues to focus on clinical skills and preparation for real-world veterinary placements. In the third year, the focus shifts to more advanced areas such as neurology, anaesthesia, and minor surgical procedures. Students also gain leadership and mentoring skills, essential for the role of a veterinary nurse. The Practical Veterinary Nursing - Placement & Clinical Skills module further develops advanced nursing techniques, particularly in anaesthesia and complex interventions, ensuring that students can safely manage anaesthetic procedures and perform nursing consultations. Finally, in year four, students refine their skills with modules like Applied Emergency & Critical Care Veterinary Nursing, which focuses on managing critically ill patients. Contemporary Veterinary Nursing introduces students to current issues in the field, including the role of a suitably qualified person. The Professional Development - Quality Improvement Project Proposal allows students to apply evidence-based practices to improve patient care and enhance their professional development, preparing them for a successful career in veterinary nursing.
