COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the Mental Health Nursing program, you will establish a strong foundation in nursing practice by focusing on core scientific principles, anatomy, physiology, and essential communication skills. You’ll explore the fundamentals of mental health and wellbeing through modules like Foundations of Mental Health Nursing Knowledge, where you’ll begin understanding the graduate mental health nurse’s role. You’ll also learn the scientific principles relevant to mental health nursing in Foundations of Scientific Principles for Mental Health Nursing. Your first practical placement, Practice Learning 1 Mental Health, will help you apply theoretical knowledge to real-world care settings, meeting basic care needs under supervision. In Year 2, the focus shifts to building practical skills in mental health assessment, psychosocial interventions, and medication management. Modules such as Developing Nursing Knowledge in Mental Health Nursing will help you gain person-centered care skills, while Developing Scientific Principles for Mental Health Nursing deepens your scientific understanding. The Practice Learning 2 Mental Health Nursing module will allow you to address more complex needs, showing increasing independence in practice. In Year 3, you will prepare for employment, consolidating your expertise with modules like Consolidating Nursing Knowledge in Mental Health Nursing, which focuses on managing care for individuals with complex needs. You will also build your leadership and management skills in Consolidating Expansive Learning for Professional Nursing Practice and gain deeper pharmacological knowledge in Consolidating Scientific Principles for Mental Health Nursing. Your final placement, Practice Learning 3 Mental Health, will allow you to demonstrate advanced skills in managing complex cases autonomously, preparing you to be a competent, reflective, and emotionally intelligent mental health nurse ready for professional practice.
