COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Criminology program at Middlesex is structured over three years to provide a comprehensive understanding of crime, justice, and social dynamics, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules in crime in social context, researching crimes and communities, responses to crime in the twenty-first century, and understanding contemporary society. These modules introduce key concepts, analytical skills, and methods for exploring the social and cultural factors that shape criminal behaviour and societal responses. The second year deepens this understanding through compulsory modules in rethinking crime and justice, criminology in practice, and research methods for studying contemporary society, equipping students with advanced research skills and applied knowledge. Optional modules, such as courts, prisons and rehabilitation, race and social justice, and victimology, allow students to explore areas of personal or professional interest. In the final year, students focus on contemporary criminological issues, with compulsory study in contemporary issues in criminology and social policy, while optional modules include cybercrime and radicalisation, drugs, crime and control, organised crime, violent crime, and a dissertation or work-based learning project. This progression ensures graduates develop a balanced combination of theoretical insight, research expertise, and practical experience, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, policy, research, social services, and related fields.
