COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology with Policing and Investigations BSc is structured to build knowledge progressively across three years, combining theory, research, and practical insight. In Year 1, students develop a strong foundation by exploring contemporary society, understanding crime within its social context, examining modern responses to crime, and learning how to research crimes and communities. This year focuses on introducing key criminological theories, social issues, and essential research skills. In Year 2, the course deepens critical understanding of crime and justice through compulsory modules in policing and law enforcement, advanced research methods, and rethinking crime and justice. Students can also tailor their studies by choosing optional modules such as victimology, courts, prisons and rehabilitation, or race and social justice, allowing them to focus on areas of personal and career interest. In Year 3, students apply their knowledge through more specialised and independent learning. They can choose between completing a dissertation or a learning-at-work module, gaining either research expertise or practical professional experience. Alongside the compulsory investigating crime module, students select from a range of contemporary options including drugs and crime, cybercrime and radicalisation, organised and powerful crimes, or violent crime. Overall, the course offers a balanced blend of academic depth, research training, and real-world relevance, preparing graduates for diverse careers in criminology, policing, research, and related fields.
