COURSE CURRICULUM

The Design Engineering BEng is structured to develop technical knowledge, creative design skills, and professional competence through a progressive three-year curriculum. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation by studying the practical application of mathematics for engineers, essential design tools, physical computing and programming, and core design and engineering principles and processes. This stage focuses on developing analytical thinking, technical confidence, and an understanding of how engineering ideas are translated into practical designs. In Year 2, learning becomes more applied and industry focused, with compulsory modules in design and manufacturing tools, sensors, actuators and control, and design and engineering in context. Students also undertake technical prototyping, gaining hands-on experience in developing, testing, and refining functional models and systems. The final year emphasises independent, research-led, and professional practice. Modules in research and innovation in practice encourage students to engage with emerging technologies and design challenges, while computer-aided engineering and optimisation techniques develop advanced analytical and simulation skills. The major project and professional practice module allows students to apply their learning to a substantial design engineering project, often reflecting real-world industrial problems. Overall, the course provides a balanced blend of theory, practical experimentation, and project-based learning, preparing graduates for careers in design engineering, product development, manufacturing, and related technical fields.
