COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of your Fine Art program, you'll be introduced to key concepts and practices that form the foundation of contemporary art and visual culture. The Art and Visual Culture module explores global visual cultures, focusing on the intersection of vision, knowledge, and power. It encourages critical thinking about the social and political contexts surrounding art. Art Ecologies: Orientation introduces the art world as an interconnected system, helping you reflect on your role as an artist and prepare for a placement experience. The Establishing a Self-Directed Practice module will initiate your individual art practice, supporting you in developing your studio work and engaging with peer discussions. Introduction to Media, Sites and Situations introduces various fine art disciplines, encouraging a flexible approach to materials and concepts while contextualizing your practice within broader social and political frameworks.In the second year, you'll further develop your practice through self-directed projects and placements. The Art Ecologies: Placement module allows you to gain practical experience by working with external organizations and reflect on the role of art in different professional contexts. Developing a Self-Directed Practice helps you consolidate your practice and develop your ability to work independently while engaging with contemporary debates in art. The Media, Sites and Situations module encourages experimentation with different media and art forms while deepening your understanding of their social and political implications. The Research and Critical Analysis module builds on your understanding of contemporary art histories, theories, and global issues, preparing you for more advanced research in the final year.In the final year, you'll focus on refining your artistic practice and preparing for a professional career in the arts. The Self-Directed Practice and Making Public module encourages you to produce an ambitious body of work, integrating conceptual, technical, and theoretical approaches. The Self-Directed Research and Thesis module provides an opportunity for in-depth research on a chosen topic in visual culture or contemporary art, culminating in a formal thesis. The Working in the Arts module prepares you for the art world beyond university, focusing on career development, curating, exhibition practices, and professional documentation of your work. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive preparation for a career in the arts, whether as a practicing artist or in related fields.
