COURSE CURRICULUM
In Year 1, the focus is on building a strong foundation in early childhood studies through a combination of theoretical and practical modules. You will critically reflect on child development and wellbeing, exploring policies and perspectives from psychology, sociology, health, and law. The Professional Expectations and Responsibilities: Working with Babies and Young Children – Placement 1 module prepares you for placement by introducing you to the responsibilities and expectations of working with young children, promoting reflective practice and professional identity development. Children and Families in a Social Context examines how historical, social, and global contexts influence childhood and learning, while Infant Health and Well-Being explores factors affecting infant health and attachment. The Early Childhood Development module provides an overview of developmental stages and key theoretical perspectives on child development.In Year 2, you will further develop your research skills and deepen your understanding of early childhood education through modules such as Introduction to Research Methods, where you learn essential research skills, and Ethical Research in Early Childhood, which focuses on preparing ethically sound research proposals. The Insights into Play and Pedagogy module emphasizes the value of play for children's development, and Pedagogical Practice to Enable Learning and Relationships – Placement 2 allows you to apply your knowledge in practice, reflecting on inclusive and sustainable pedagogical approaches. Sociological Perspectives on Early Childhood explores sociological perspectives on equality, inclusion, and children's rights.Year 3 focuses on applying your learning to educational policy and practice. The Independent Graduate Practitioner Research Project allows you to conduct action research, using research to inform leadership in early childhood education. Leading Practice in Early Years – Placement 3 helps you develop leadership skills and apply theoretical knowledge to practice, preparing you for a career as a reflective and autonomous early years practitioner. Through these modules, you will enhance your professional identity, critical thinking skills, and ability to lead in early years settings.
