COURSE CURRICULUM

The Animation program at Middlesex University is a comprehensive, three-year course designed to prepare students for careers in the animation industry. In the first year, students are introduced to the core principles of animation, including drawing movement and the technical processes required to bring animations to life. Through modules such as Techniques and Practices I, Creation and Ideation, and Animation Production, students develop technical skills and creative approaches to storytelling, visual communication, and character design. They also learn to use industry-standard software and explore the social responsibility of representing diverse characters in animation. In Year 2, students deepen their skills in character creation and narrative development. The Developing Characters & Narratives module focuses on enhancing storytelling abilities, while Collaborative Animation Filmmaking introduces students to the collaborative nature of the animation industry. Students learn to work in teams, taking on roles such as director, producer, and animator, to produce professional-quality films. The Animation Industries module helps students understand the realities of the industry, offering insights into different animation practices around the world.In Year 3, students work on a major project, consolidating their skills and preparing for their careers. Modules such as Professional Animation Production, Critical Animation Research, and Major Project provide students with the opportunity to specialize in their area of interest, whether it's directing a complete film or focusing on a specific aspect of animation like storyboarding or character animation. The Portfolio & Showreel Development module ensures that students are ready to enter the competitive job market with professional promotional materials, while the Critical Animation Research project allows students to conduct independent research that enhances their practical work. By the end of the program, students are fully prepared for a career in the animation industry.
