COURSE CURRICULUM

The Product Design BA at Middlesex University is structured to develop creative, technical, and professional skills over three years of study. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules in contextual studies and studio practice, design and engineering principles and processes, design projects, and design tools. This first year focuses on developing essential design skills, understanding key engineering principles, and learning how to translate ideas into practical concepts through hands-on studio work. In Year 2, students progress into more applied and specialised learning with modules in design and manufacturing tools, design methods, processes and practices, design and engineering in context, and technical prototyping. These modules provide students with practical experience in developing, testing, and refining designs, while also fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and an understanding of real-world industrial contexts. In Year 3, students consolidate their skills and knowledge through advanced modules in design manifestation and research and innovation in practice, alongside a major project with professional practice. The final year emphasises independent project work, innovation, and professional readiness, allowing students to produce a portfolio of high-quality work. Overall, the course combines creative exploration, technical proficiency, and industry-relevant experience, preparing graduates for careers in product design, innovation, and related sectors.
