COURSE CURRICULUM

The Net Zero Building Services Engineering MSc provides a structured curriculum that integrates technical expertise, practical application, and research skills to prepare students for careers in sustainable building design. In Semester 1, compulsory modules focus on the fundamentals of building performance and research. Wellbeing and Indoor Environment examines how to design healthy and comfortable indoor spaces, while Building Thermal Loads and Systems explores the calculation and management of thermal requirements in buildings. Thermal Modelling and 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM) introduces advanced tools for analysing and visualising building performance. Research Methods develops essential academic and professional research skills, supporting the Work Based Research Project, which runs across both semesters and provides the opportunity to apply knowledge in real-world or industry-linked contexts. In Semester 2, students continue with core modules that expand their expertise in sustainable energy systems. Electrical Systems: Buildings and Renewable Energy covers the integration of renewable energy into building designs, and Building Energy Supply Systems and District Energy Networks focuses on large-scale energy solutions. Net Zero Building Design brings together these concepts to explore strategies for achieving net zero performance. Students can also tailor their learning by choosing an optional module such as Control and Commissioning for Low Energy Buildings, Design Management, or Federated BIM.
