COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Civil Engineering offers an in-depth exploration of advanced topics essential for addressing contemporary challenges in construction, infrastructure, and environmental engineering. In the first semester, students engage with core modules including research methods, low carbon materials for construction, advanced geotechnical and environmental modelling, and quantitative and numerical methods for engineering. These modules provide a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical approaches to sustainable and efficient civil engineering practices. Across the program, students undertake a substantial research dissertation, allowing them to apply their knowledge to real-world engineering problems while developing advanced analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills. In the second semester, the curriculum includes modules in geographic information systems and data management, as well as structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, equipping students with the ability to analyse complex structural systems and assess risk. Optional modules enable further specialisation, with choices such as disaster risk management or flood modelling and management, alongside strategic management for construction and engineering or organisation and people, allowing students to tailor their learning to career aspirations. The MSc integrates technical expertise with research-led learning, preparing graduates for careers in civil engineering consultancy, design, and management or for continued academic study, fostering the skills needed to tackle modern infrastructure and environmental challenges effectively.
