COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Communication, Media and Development program combines theoretical understanding with practical application to prepare students for impactful careers in the field of development and social change. In the first semester, students explore critical perspectives on media industries, examining how global communication shapes societies, while studying international development with a focus on the Global South. Students also engage with contemporary challenges through modules on grand challenges and can tailor their learning with optional modules in areas such as promotional practices or sustainable development. The second semester focuses on applying communication and media strategies to foster development and social change, alongside a substantial dissertation that allows students to investigate a topic of their choice in depth. Additional optional modules provide opportunities to explore disaster risk management, media and social movements, corporate social responsibility, and research approaches in sustainable development. Students can also engage in collaborative projects or fieldwork experiences, including learning from the Global South, to gain real-world exposure. This combination of critical analysis, applied research, and practical experience equips graduates with the skills to design, implement, and evaluate communication strategies that address global challenges, preparing them to work in international organisations, NGOs, policy development, or media-focused social change initiatives.
